Call for Proposals: UNCDF ‘Tanzania Angel Investor Academy'(Value $30,000.00 to $60,000.00)

In Tanzania, UNCDF aims to address key market constraints that inhibit the development of an inclusive digital economy. An area of focus is supporting Tanzania’s startup ecosystem.  Funding and access to capital has emerged as one of the more important aspects limiting startups’ ability to scale. Tanzania’s limited funding ecosystem and foreign investors  require startups to invest significant time and resources to attract smaller funding amounts than their counterparts in other regions.  Through its TIDE project, funded by the EU, UNCDF looks to catalyze financing for tech-enabled start-ups by growing the funder landscape in Tanzania to better support entrepreneurs and drive digital innovation.

Most funding to tech start-ups comes from angel investors or venture capitalists; angel investment in particular, is a key source of patient capital that is well-suited to the changing needs of early-stage startups. In Tanzania, there is a growing interest in early-stage angel investment, however, many potential angel investors lack the knowledge, resources and skills to confidently invest in startups. There is a need to develop a national resource center or academic program which can provide targeted training and information to potential angel investors to boost local investment in the national digital economy.

UNCDF IDE Tanzania invites hubs, training centers and/or organizations to respond to the Request for Application (RFA) ‘Tanzania Angel Investor Academy’ to pilot the establishment of an investor resource center/program to equip future angel investors with the necessary knowledge and skills to make informed investment decisions and spur further interest in the development of local financing options for Tanzanian startups.

The geographic scope of the intervention is the United Republic of Tanzania. To be eligible, applicants must be registered and operating in Tanzania.

UNCDF will provide a grant to the successful applicant which will be delivered through a Performance-Based Agreement (PBA) with UNCDF.

With support from the European Union through its Digital4Tanzania (D4T) Action, UNCDF is currently implementing the Tanzania Inclusive Digital Economy (TIDE) project. Launched in September 2022, D4T-IDE is a four-year project that aims to increase access to and usage of digital payments and digital financial services in Tanzania, while enabling the innovation ecosystem to better support entrepreneurs and further drive digital innovation.
